I swear 90% of the people that contact me speak English as a 3rd language. Also “What’s the lowest you will take?” is the stupidest fucking thing ever. My asking price is my asking price. Make a counter offer or give me what I want. Fuckin sake.

The immediate and inevitable “what is your best price?” question bugs the shit out of me. And if you specifically word the ad to discourage that, you’ll quickly find that all Craigslist readers but yourself are apparently illiterate.

I’ve had a relatively new problem selling the Bronco. I’ve had text convos with like 3 different people, all with legitimate questions, then ask if they can take a look at it. I tell them when I’m available, and they become completely non-responsive.

I’m guessing you live around a lot of white people if you’re suprised by people on CL not being native English speakers. Also, that you seem to think being trilingual is a detriment. Midwest?

Im going through the same crap now. I have 3 cars for sale on cl and I keep getting the “will you take $6,000 for the jeep?”
Its listed at 11,998.
then when I say no, they get offended; like “jeez man, its all I got so I figured id ask”
if all you’ve got is half then your looking at the wrong price point.

Kansas. Huge hispanic population here. Not a detriment, but I have a hard enough time understanding native English speakers it is unbelievably frustrating trying to talk to people who can barely eke out a sentence through their heavy-ass accent.
Also I went to engineering school and it made me a bit racist.

Wichita has two dominantly Hispanic areas, and I have worked in buy here pay here lots smack in the middle of each.
Engineering school made it very difficult to look past stereotypes when every middle-eastern person I met lived up perfectly to every stereotype. Even more infuriating was my Indian Precalc teacher who on top of being impossible to understand was an enormous asshole who would ask me a question and after about five times of me asking him to repeat himself because I had no clue what he asked would devolve into incoherent yelling. Now just hearing an Indian accent makes me angry because of that guy and some of my prick-ass Indian classmates who would treat everyone else like lower class citizens and smelled like shit and weed all of the goddamn time.

They have precalc in engineering school? Isn’t that a class you take in high school? Also, you know they speak English in India, right? While Hindi is the official national language, English is the de facto national language.
What are the stereotypes associated with Middle Eastern people? There’s a lot of varied cultures there, you know. Which ME country are you referring to? Were they all small business owners, or really into ‘90s BMWs? Maybe they just all smoked a lot of cigarettes? Honestly, the only stereotype I can think of that’s associated with all people from the ME is smoking cigarettes.
So, to summarize:
1. You don’t like trilingual latinos who speak English with an accent
2. You don’t like ME people because they fit as of yet unnamed stereotypes
3. You think Indians smell and can’t speak English, and the mere sound of an Indian accent makes you angry
Yeah, I don’t think precalc is to blame for your admitted racism. What are your thought on blacks and Jews?

Dangerous waters but the de facto ME stereotype is arrogance. Which his teacher displayed in getting made at him for not understanding his accent, since it couldn’t possibly be his fault that he spoke poorly, it had to be the listener’s fault for not understanding. That’s arrogance.

...Except he said his professor was Indian, and either way, the actions of an individual belonging to group X do not justify discrimination against literally everyone else in that group.

Almost every white man in my childhood was abusive to me, my sisters, and/or my mother. Somehow I survived without needing to avoid them altogether. Hell, I’m even engaged to one now. It’s time to stop blaming your environment, upbringing, and other people and take personal responsibility for your own biases. At the very least, keep it off of Oppo. We do have rules against that type of thing.

“Dangerous” isn’t the word I’d use to describe these waters. He said his teacher was Indian. India is not in the ME. So even if classifying all the varied cultures of the ME under the same unnamed stereotypes made sense, you saying his Indian teacher displayed a Middle Eastern stereotype of arrogance doesn’t.
DynamicWeight

You’re right, they don’t. I can’t agree with Jake saying he writes off literally everyone who looks a certain way. What I will say, is I am familiar with a personality/character type. I can recognize it fairly quickly and will avoid certain people. Individuals. If you grew up with abuse, are you better at spotting an abusive person and quickly cutting them out of your life? I hope so.
It’s a precarious thing, being social with our humans. It’s easy to make mistakes. But to approach every person completely ignoring everything you know about their culture seems to be a poor strategy.

You sure about that? Because DynamicWeight is under the impression that India is in the Middle East. I don’t think his explanation is the one you want to go with.
Look, I understand that trying to catch up on math can be tough and frustrating, and having a bad teacher doesn’t help. However, don’t let that frustration manifest itself in racial hate/bias towards others. People with accents built this country, and have to put up with a lot of crap. You especially shouldn’t rag on people who speak multiple languages when you have a hard time understanding people speaking your native language, albeit with an accent.
Not trying to be a dick, just trying to engender some understanding.

You’re right, I have made the same mistake that people who say “White People” make by grouping a bunch of very similar groups under one heading. Perhaps a technically incorrect one. You can also argue details and specific points, but everything I say will fall apart under that kind of careful scrutiny and I am okay with that, it doesn’t make it less true.
Because I am not talking about individuals. I am talking about the incredibly complex concept of culture. There are fuzzy truths that exist, that should not be used to institutionally discriminate against individuals, but that you would be remiss in your own life to ignore.

You can also argue details and specific points, but everything I say will fall apart under that kind of careful scrutiny and I am okay with that, it doesn’t make it less true.
What? Careful scrutiny? Like looking at a globe and clearly seeing that India is not in the Middle East, and shares almost nothing culturally with that part of the globe? And now you’re trying to argue that the Middle East is composed of similar groups of people? You ever heard of the Arab-Israeli conflict? Or how about the several centuries of conflict that have existed between Shias and Sunnis? You think a Bedouin living in the deserts of Jordan have a similar culture to a Jew living in Tel Aviv because they both live in the Middle East? Do you also think Persian culture is similar to Arab or Jewish culture?
Because I am not talking about individuals. I am talking about the incredibly complex concept of culture. There are fuzzy truths that exist, that should not be used to institutionally discriminate against individuals, but that you would be remiss in your own life to ignore.
I have travelled all over the world and experienced many different cultures. Culture unites people, but it in no way determines any sort of collective personality traits. The fact that you’re also classifying disparate cultures into one category makes even less sense. Applying a preconceived notion of someone based on your experience growing up in Wichita is in no way going to benefit you. It’s going to turn you into a grumpy, bitter person.

I grew up in the Bay Area. I’ve been to Europe, Asia, Mexico, Canada and the Middle East. I went to University on the East Coast.
Cultures absolutely do affect personality and character. To say differently is ludicrous. You should ask my friends if I am grumpy and bitter, I do not think they would say so. I love life. I also love all kinds of people.

I wasn’t referring to you, I was referring to the kid complaining about hispanics and Indians having accents, and saying Indians smell bad. I only responded to you because you erroneously thought India was in the Middle East.
Cultures absolutely do affect personality and character.
I never said they don’t affect it, I said they don’t determine it. That’s why people within cultures have different personalities and character traits. To say otherwise is ignorant. It’s also ignorant to classify the Middle East under one cultural banner. It’s even more ignorant to think India is in the Middle East.

You replied to me and said “Your experience of growing up in Wichita”. You we’re writing to me and got confused, but no problem.
Also, you wrote the ME thing initially and I didn’t look too closely at Jake’s post to notice the teacher was Indian and not ME, an acronym I am not used to using and used incorrectly. A mistake, not an ignorance, I know they are not the same thing. I made a mistake. I admit that. You can get over that and continue or not.
Whether they act similarly and can be broadly characterized, I think they can. If we were to widely categorize the world into White, Black, Hispanic, Asian, and Brown, they’d all be lumped together. You can drill down all those into smaller groups, but it doesn’t make those groups invalid.
All these groups have characteristics and averages, which, while not defining any one person, do give some indication into how various people will act. Different groups and cultures are celebrated for their actions constantly, if some things can be positive, things can be negative too.
Again, for the sake of the record, I do not condone, and actively fight against discrimination. Especially in any sort of institutional sense.

In order to prove your point, could you please show me some scientific data regarding personality traits and characteristics of “Middle Easterners” as a monolithic cultural group. Don’t forget to include further data which will, as you say, “give some indication as to how various people will act”. While we’re at it, include some studies that do the same for Indians as a monolithic cultural group. Maybe throw in some data for “Asians” while we’re at it. Shit, you should probably post of some research into “The Jews” as well.

Well, it’s certainly easier to keep my unpopular opinions to myself. But I’ve found that when I do that they just sit there, festering, remaining unchallenged. It’s easy to really convince yourself of something incorrect if you never talk to anyone about it. I know, I’ve done it. That’s why I try my level best to keep having difficult conversations, because sometimes I find the fault in my thinking, which helps me understand the world better, and ultimately, makes me a better person, I think.
